Employees’ Summer Escapade

As part of the Motivational Program of the United Sugarcane Planters of Davao- Savings and Credit Cooperative, the management conducted a Teambuilding Activity last summer (April 23- 24, 2008) at Palm Hill Resort, Samal Island.

Pastor Poppi was invited to facilitate the Spiritual Growth Session which was done in the evening of April 23. A Guidance Counselor from University of Mindanao, Mrs. Emma Ceballo facilitated the Teambuilding Activity. A series of games had been enjoyed by all staff, wherein not only their physical stamina was tested, but also their intellect, patience and most of all, TEAMWORK.

USPD SCC conducts 4th Annual General Assembly

scc 4th GA\’08United Sugarcane Planters of Davao Savings and Credit Cooperative (USPD SCC) had successfully conducted its 4th Annual General Assembly last April 22, 2008 covering Sta. Maria, Malita and Don Marcelino members at Sta. Maria Municipal Gymnasium. For the members in Sulop, Malalag, Kiblawan, Sta. Cruz, Matanao, Bansalan, Digos, North Cotabato, it was held on April 26 in University of Mindanao Digos College.

Around 1, 500 members participated in the main while around 500 in Sta. Maria. Various prizes were enjoyed by the members and they were entertained also by numerous presentations (dance, song).

This training covers a wide array of practical environmental management topics and productivity tools which can help improve the environmental and financial performance of FSSI partner coops and their respective micro and small enterprise clients.

USPD SCC sent 4 of their employees (1 is BOD) who form their Management Team. They are: Mrs. Jaymelita Mabunga, CPA (BOD), Mr. George J. Pupa (OIC/ Chief Loan), Mr. Michael Angelo Mascardo (CI/BI) & Ms. Leah L. Fernando (HR- Personnel).

THE NEW FRONTIER: LINKING REMITTANCE TO MICROFINANCE

The Ateneo de Manila University Microfinance Capacity – Building Program held a training event entitled “The New Frontier: Linking Microfinance and Remittances”.

USPD sent 2 of their senoir employees to represent in the training: MR. GEORGE J. PUPA – OIC/ Chief Loans of Credit Coop and MS. MA. LOURDES L. CANO – EDP In- Charge.

This was held on February 28 – March 1, 2008 at the Ateneo de Manila University, Katipunan Avenue, Loyola Heights, Quezon City. The course may be credited towards a Diploma in Microfinance. This ran for 3 days and cost an amount of P3, 500.00 per participant.

RATIONALE OF TRAINING:

There is a natural strategic link between microfinance and remittances. Research data shows that 40% of the total remittances go to the rural areas where MFIs are present. However, most MFIs fail to recognize the opportunity in remittances as one of the means to achieve financial sustainability and social mission.

Remittances as a fee-based product offer the opportunity to MFIs to achieve financial goals. At the same time, poor migrants in host countires send remittances to even poorer households in their countries of origin. MFIS could offer remitttance receivers the opportunity to leverage remittances with pro poor financial products, thus, achieving their social mission.

The course presented different remittance operations models where MFIs could participate . It outlined the advantages and disadvantages of the different remitance operations models as well as tools on how to negotiate with money transfer operators.

The course also provided guidelines for MFIs on how to develop pro-poor financial products that are linked to remittances.

HR-Training Officer joins EntrepEskwela

ABS – CBN Bayan Foundation, Inc. takes a new path to becoming a “social entrepreneur” that continuously develops social innovation through entrepreneurial solutions. It has developed the EntrepEskwela or the Grassroots Entrepeurship Entrepreneruship and Management (GEM) program, which targets the client systems of microfinance institutions, primarily the women with livelihood and microenterprises undertakings.

EntrepEskwela is in collaboration with their media principal and partner MFIs notably the CCT. They have mobilized experts in training small and medium scale entrepreneurs to create new and exciting modules for micro entrepreneurs. These training courses are very relevant and responsible to the learning preferences of the masses. The formula is to use Filipino (and other dialects) as the language of instruction, make the materials highly audio-visual, and entertaining, and increase the interactivity level of the learning experience. The objective of the program is to promote, develop and help grow livelihood and microenterprises to increase sales, assets, profits and net worth of clients.

USPD was invited to participate in this training entitled “4th GEM Traninor’s Training”, scheduled from February 17 – 29, 2008 in Capitol University, Cagayan de Oro City and on March 24 -April 4, 2008 in Ateneo de Davao University, Davao City.

Thus, USPD HR Training Officer, Mrs. Shella S. Malangis was sent to this activity. A total of P25, 000. 00 was paid for the registration fee for the 20- day training exclusive of incidental costs such as food, transportation and accommodation.

USPD celebrates Women’s Month

The City Government of Digos initiates an Inter-Agency Sportsfest on March 6- 8, 2008 as a way to celebrate the Women's Month. It was culminated wih a Parade by all government and non- government organizations in Digos City as well as all its barangay. 
USPD joins in the said activity. 
The General Manager, Imelda S. Magabilen, let its female employees to take part in the event. Before the Sportsfest, USPD set an Elimination to choose the players who would represent the game events. The chosen players were given a uniform for them to wear on their play.
The players are as follows: 
Volleyball: Gemma Almerez, Josephine "Ampin" Quimbo, Dorie Ann MAnza, Mary Ann Maravillas, Jhunilou Pongase, Leonila Ulan- Olan, Mercy Sultan, Merry Chris Oman, Mary Grace Miranda and Celeste "Dawn" Rinonos".

USPD's participation in the Inter-Agency Sportsfest shows their support to the City Government in their advocacy to empower women from different sectors/ walks of life.
